Construction Accident Statistics

Out of the many workplace accidents that occurred in the year 2004, the construction industry accounted for more fatal workplace accidents than any other industry, according to new statistics released from the Department of Labor-Bureau of Statistics. It is estimated that there were more than 6 million people working in the construction industry in 2004. This large work force accounted for more than 400,000 construction site injuries. Recently reported 2004 statistics show that there were 1,224 fatal work accidents in the construction industry alone. Even though efforts have been made to reduce workplace injuries, the construction industry saw an increase in fatal accidents of 8% compared to statistics from the year 2003. Falls accounted for 36% of these fatal accidents while 12% of these accidents were the result of being struck by objects at the construction site. The reported fatal accidents broke down by category into: 285 fatal transportation incidents; 265 fatal contacts with objects and equipment; 441 falls; 169 cases of exposure to harmful substances or environments; and 34 fatal incidents of fires and explosions.
