Nationwide Car Accident Statistics

Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in motor vehicle accidents involving trucks, motorcycles and passenger cars. Accidents account for billions of dollars in property damage and medical fees annually. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released data concerning traffic accidents on a nationwide basis for the year 2004. The results are staggering as there were an estimated 6,181,000 traffic accidents reported to the police in 2004. These 6 million plus accidents resulted in 42,636 deaths and 2,788,000 injuries.
Motor vehicle accidents have become so prevalent that, according to traffic accident data from the year 2002, motor vehicle accidents were the leading cause of death amongst people from the ages of 3 to 33. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated that in the year 2004, 117 people died each day as a result of motor vehicle accidents. That number translates into one person dying every 12 minutes. Often, death resulted from the reckless behavior of other drivers, as 16,694 fatalities were the result of alcohol related traffic accidents. Beyond the bodily harm that results from all of these traffic accidents, the economic cost is great as well. The monetary toll of traffic accidents is quite substantial as reports indicate that monetary damages from motor vehicle accidents in the year 2000 resulted in $230.6 billion in losses.

Statute of Limitations

Most states, including New York, have set strict time limitations during which one can recover for any personal injuries resulting from a car or truck accident. If you do not secure your rights within the applicable time period, you may permanently lose your opportunity to bring a claim for personal injuries sustained. Since the ability to recover for your damages is very time sensitive, it is important that you contact an experienced attorney immediately.
