Childrens' Cold Medicine: No More Effective than Home Remedies
It is difficult for parents to know what to do when their children get sick and have a bad cough. Coughing is perceived as an unwanted symptom of Colds not just because it seems to spread the germs causing the illness, but because coughing at night prevents the sick child (and many times their concerned parents) from sleeping. Cough medicines have been marketed to consumers as an effective way of reducing the symptoms of colds, particularly stopping the coughing. The FDA has recently called into question the effectiveness of cold/cough medicines when used on small children. Their recommendation was not to administer such medicines to children under the age of 6. Many cold / cough medications still contain dosing information applicable to children as young as two. The FDA says that there is very little objective information or studies that show cough medicines produce any results when administered on young children. In spite of the fact that these medications haven't been proven to ameliorate colds and coughing, many consumers still give them to their children. Sales of cold and cough medicines for children could account for several billion dollars of annual revenue for the drug companies that produce them.
