Facebook "Beacon" Advertising Raises Privacy Concerns

Facebook is one of the largest social networking websites, with many millions of users registered. Recent additions to the underlying method by which its users are shown advertisements have generated new concerns about the types of information that Facebook collects from its users, and how that information is used. "Beacon" is the name of the system that shows the friends of Facebook users their purchases online. The Beacon system started out working with 44 initial online vendors, such as Blockbuster.com or Fandango.com, when a Facebook user would make a purchase on those sites (even if they were not logged into Facebook), the purchase would be listed on the user's news feed. This caused problems for many people around Christmas who had their presents for their friends or partners broadcast on their news feed, and spoiled the surprise. Additionally, this program was implemented without Facebook users' direct consent, and did not initially provide a way to "opt out."
