HP Inkjet Printers

Seeger Weiss LLP is investigating claims against Hewlett-Packard Inkjet printers that utilize "smart chip" technology for a potential class action lawsuit. According to HP, “smart chip” technology monitors the amount of ink remaining in a cartridge and alerts printer owners when a new cartridge should be obtained. However, consumers have found that their claims are misleading, false and harmful. They found that the "smart chip" is designed and programmed to send premature and false “Low on Ink” messages to consumers advising them that they will need to purchase a replacement cartridge of ink, when the printer cartridge is far from empty and is capable of printing hundreds of additional pages. The "smart chip" also steers consumers to a HP sponsored website to purchase HP replacement cartridges online before the consumer needs replacement ink. Additionally, the "smart chip" has been programmed in conjunction with the use of various HP printer models, to automatically prevent the use of a printer cartridge, even if full or nearly full, on a date predetermined by HP. This expiration date is timed well before the ink in the cartridge ceases to be useable for printing.
