Louisiana-Pacific Manufactured Decking Materials Deteriorate Prematurely

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (LP) announced that it received claims showing accelerated deterioration of several lines of its composite building materials manufactured in its Meridian, Idaho plant between 2005 and 2007. The composite boards, used primarily for decks, can begin to disintegrate and break, posing a risk for homeowners who used these materials for their decks. The symptoms of the failure can be seen toward the ends of the boards, where flaking and cracking can become evident. Unfortunately, this outward manifestation of the defect is not always present in boards that are damaged, posing a threat of failure without warning.

Product Lines Affected

All of the products affected were sold after January 1st, 2005. One of the product lines potentially affected by the defect were made by LP for the Veranda label, and sold to consumers in the Western part of the US through The Home Depot. States where these products were sold include AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY, and TX. Another line of potentially affected products were branded as “ABTCo Decking products” and were sold in the Western part of the US through The Home Depot. States where these ABTCo products were sold include: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY, and TX. Another line of products affected were manufactured by LP under the WeatherBest and LP WeatherBest label, and were distributed throughout the US and were sold by building product manufacturers.
