Wireless-“N” High Speed Wireless

The 802.11n wireless networking standard increases the maximum data rate to 248Mbit per second from the 54 Mbit per second offered by the previous “G” standard. Many computer component manufacturers brought routers to market to implement the new specification. Netgear’s WNR854T RangeMax router, however, appears to have been brought to market with serious product defects.

Netgear WNR854T: “Green Light of Death”

There have been reports of complete failure of the WNR854T router within the first few months of operation. Consumers typically experience a total failure of networking functions, with only the small green ‘power’ light remaining functional. This failure pattern and effect has been dubbed the “Netgear Green Light of Death” by unsatisfied consumers. If the part fails within the warranty period, Netgear reportedly replaces the unit, though the replacements are just as susceptible to breaking down as the originals.
