Playstation 3 Yellow Light of Death (YLOD)
Most gaming enthusiasts have been impressed by Sony's Playstation 3's reliability. In the early days after it was sold, Sony reported a very low failure rate that was less than 1%. This was contrasted with Microsoft's XBOX 360's nearly 33% failure rate. The XBOX had 4 illuminated red lights that signaled a critical failure. This phenomenon was called the "Red Ring of Death" by those who experienced it. Even though there were few reports of PS3's breaking within a short period of time after their purchase, it appears that many consumers are experiencing problems with their PS3's just after a year of use. The Yellow Light of Death (a parody of the XBOX's Red Light (ring) of Death) is the main power light that goes from red when turned off, to green when attempting to boot, changing to yellow and then crashing. This yellow light is reported to mean a general "hardware failure." Unfortunately for many PS3 owners, this failure appears to happen just out of the warranty period. Sony marketed its PS3 as exceptionally durable, showing commercials of PS3's running for many hours in freezing temperatures or in a hot sauna. More and more consumers are finding out that the product itself does not appear to be as durable as advertised. Furthermore, few options are extended to the consumer whose PS3 has 'died' in that manner.
