Apple iPhone 3G Performance Disappoints

The iPhone 3G, the successor to the original Apple iPhone, created a stir when it was released because it claimed to offer improvements in performance over the original iPhone by using AT&T’s 3G network, a high-speed wireless cellular network. The 3G network has a theoretical maximum download rate of 14.4 Mbps; AT&T’s highest download speed is around 1.4Mbps. This greater downloading speed is supposed to make accessing the internet and e-mail very fast, and particularly faster than the previous iPhone. Unfortunately for many consumers, the actual downloading speed they experience isn’t even coming close to AT&T’s claimed maximum, and in many instances the iPhone does not stay connected to the 3G network, and instead is re-directed to the slower EDGE network. This causes internet applications to perform poorly, or fail completely. Several industry analysts have concluded that this lack of network performance is due to a poorly developed chipset in the iPhone 3G itself, and sub-standard antenna performance inside the iPhone.
