What is Accutane?
Accutane, also known by the generic name isotretinoin, is marketed and sold by Hoffman-LaRoche. Accutane is a drug prescribed to treat very severe forms of acne, such as cystic or nodular acne. These forms of acne can result in many swollen, red bumps on the skin that may cause significant physical pain and scarring if not properly treated. Due to the possibly significant negative side effects of Accutane, the drug is normally used as a last resort when other forms of acne treatment including the use of over the counter products or prescription antibiotics have not been successful in treating the acne.
Accutane Side Effects
Common side effects of Accutane may include dry mouth, dry skin, chapped lips and nosebleeds. The use of Accutane may also result in significantly more harmful side effects including the risk of extremely severe birth defect with the possibility of premature birth or miscarriage. Accutane may also be linked to such harmful side effects as pancreatitis, vision and hearing problems, stomach and intestinal disorders including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), bone and muscle problems, rectal bleeding, depression, psychosis, and possibly suicide or suicidal ideation.

Accutane and Depression
Accutane has received extensive media coverage recently, as the use of Accutane may be linked to causing mental changes leading to depression. In some cases, depression may lead to contemplation of suicide or even attempts at suicide. The FDA has previously announced that the labeling of Accutane would be changed to warn users about the possibility of depression. Physicians have been advised to closely monitor those patients who have been prescribed Accutane for any signs of depression, mood changes, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts.
Accutane and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Accutane may cause serious stomach and intestinal problems. Accutane has been linked to inflammatory bowel disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of the digestive tract, including the stomach, mouth, and intestines. IBD can affect the large intestine alone, a condition called ulcerative colitis, or any other part of the digestive tract, which is then called Crohn's disease. Symptoms that may indicate the development of IBD or damage to internal organs of patients, may include severe stomach, chest or bowel pain, troubled or painful swallowing, heartburn, fever, weight loss, yellowing of skin or eyes, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and dark urine. Accutane has been linked to IBD, even in patients who have no previous history of stomach or intestinal problems prior to taking Accutane. IBD is a very serious condition, as even stopping the use of Accutane may not put an end to the effects of the disorder and severe IBD cases may need ongoing treatment or even surgery to remove the affected colon, in order to deal with the symptoms.
