ReNu with MoistureLoc Withdrawn from Market
ReNu with MoistureLoc, a popular product manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, is used for the daily cleaning and disinfection of contact lenses. Recently, Bausch & Lomb voluntarily stopped shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc solution and asked retailers in the United States to remove any ReNu with MoistureLoc that was manufactured in its U.S. plant in South Carolina from their shelves, after the product was linked to reports of Fusarium keratitis. Fusarium keratitis is a fungal eye infection that can scar the cornea and lead to blindness if it is not properly treated.

FDA and CDC Investigation
The announcement by Bausch & Lomb to cease the sale of ReNu with MoistureLoc arose after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that they are investigating an increasing number of reports in the U.S. of Fusarium keratitis in individuals who wear soft contact lenses. According to the FDA, as of April 9, 2006, 109 cases of suspected Fusarium keratitis were reportedly under investigation by the CDC and public health authorities in 17 states. The Associated Press (AP) has reported that the number of cases has grown since then to 176 confirmed or suspected cases reported in 28 states.
Fusarium Keratitis and ReNu with MoistureLoc
According to a statement released by the FDA, 30 cases of Fusarium keratitis have been fully investigated by the FDA and the CDC, and the results indicate that of the 30 cases, 28 were soft contact lens wearers with 26 reportedly using Bausch & Lomb ReNu brand solution or a generic brand also made by Bausch & Lomb, during the month prior to infection. ReNu was used in conjunction with other contact solutions in 5 of the investigated cases. It has also been reported that Bausch & Lomb had previously suspended sales of ReNu multipurpose solutions manufactured in its U.S. plant, in Singapore and Hong Kong in February of 2006, after cases of Fusarium keratitis were reported amongst users of contact lenses in those regions. As the investigation into the cause behind the latest increase in Fusarium keratitis cases continues, and more cases of infection are linked to ReNu, users of the contact solution have been advised by the FDA to cease the use of the solution immediately and to discard any remaining supplies of the solution.
Fusarium Keratitis and ReNu MultiPlus
In an update issued May 2, 2006, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided more statistics on the contact lens solutions used by those affected by Fusarium keratitis. 15 users of Bausch & Lomb ReNu MultiPlus also appear to be affected.

Fusarium Keratitis and Possible Blindness
ReNu with MoistureLoc users and those who wear contact lenses in general should be aware of the symptoms of Fusarium keratitis as the infection may lead to partial vision loss or total blindness if not treated in a timely manner. Symptoms may include pain, redness, blurry vision, discharge, tearing, swelling, and light sensitivity. Treatment for Fusarium keratitis can involve the use of topical and oral antifungal medications. However, patients that do not respond to the antifungal medications may be forced to undergo surgery, including the possibility of corneal transplants to save their vision. According to AP reports, at least 8 people have required corneal transplants during this outbreak of Fusarium keratitis.
