What is Akathisia?
Akathisia is an unpleasant feeling of restlessness resulting in an inability to sit still. It is a common side effect of certain drugs, including atypical antipsychotic Zyprexa, and SSRIs such as Paxil, Xanax, and Zoloft.
Akathisia Symptoms
Akathisia may exhibit itself as a relatively insignificant sense of restlessness and anxiety, but can also result in a complete inability to sit still with severe anxiety and dysphoria. In the most severe cases, dysphoria can result in suicidal thoughts and attempts.
Akathisia Treatment
Treatment includes the discontinuation or reduction of dose of the causative medication. Some consider other drugs such as cyproheptadine, benztropine, and benadryl, though excess use of benadryl may worsen symptoms. Most of the clinical cases of akathisia, however, can be prevented by simply discontinuing use of the drugs that cause the condition.
Akathisia Claims
Akathisia is a difficult condition to detect, and may present unexpectedly. It is often misdiagnosed, and can lead the patient to commit suicide in or outside the hospital. Roger Lane, a scientist at Pfizer, the creator of Zoloft, has stated that "all SSRIs have the rare potential to cause akathisia." In some cases, he said, patients may feel "death is a welcome result." If you or a family member has exhibited akathisia as a result of medication, you should contact a physician immediately.
