ASBESTOS FACTS

Asbestos is in the air we breathe and often in the water we drink, including water from natural sources. Studies have shown that members of the general population have tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of asbestos fibers in each gram of lung tissue. Nevertheless, standard exposure to common amounts of asbestos dust has not posed a documented health problem to the general public.

However, those who have been occupationally exposed to asbestos - such as construction workers, shipyard workers, and possibly those who served in the rescue efforts during the World Trade Center tragedy - are at risk for developing asbestosis, mesothelioma and other forms of cancer associated with asbestos. Since 1940, over 27.5 million people have been occupationally exposed to asbestos in the United States and over 30 million tons of asbestos

What about safety standards?

Even though today tight governmental regulations control the production and use of asbestos products as well as asbestos abatement procedures, the number of cases of asbestosis, mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers has been steadily increasing. After a person is initially exposed to significant amounts of asbestos, decades will pass before he or she will show any symptoms of an asbestos-related disease. Oftentimes, as is the case with mesothelioma, symptoms appear when the disease has already reached a terminal stage.
