What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce adequate amounts, or properly use its insulin. Insulin is the hormone that converts carbohydrates such as sugars and starches into energy. Diabetes can be caused by many factors such as obesity and genetics, but recently certain drugs have been associated with diabetes.

Antipsychotics and Diabetes

Studies have indicated atypical antipsychotic drugs such as Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Seroquel can trigger diabetes. These drugs have also been linked with other blood sugar disorders including hyperglycemia. Antipsychotics are commonly prescribed to treat patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.
