What is Fusarium Keratitis?
Fusarium keratitis is a serious infection of the cornea that may have potentially severe adverse effects including partial vision loss or permanent blindness if not properly treated. Cases of Fusarium keratitis are usually found in tropical or subtropical environments, but the fungus that causes the infection, Fusarium, can be found almost anywhere. The fungi can normally be found in plants and soil. The risk factors for the infection include trauma involving plant material, immunodeficiency, chronic ocular surface diseases, and contact lens use.
ReNu with MoistureLoc and Fusarium Keratitis
Fusarium keratitis has been a frequent topic of media coverage recently, after an increase of Fusarium keratitis cases were reported in the United States. Initial reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that they were investigating 109 suspected or confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis in 17 states. As additional claims of infection have continued to be discovered, the Associated Press has reported that the CDC has raised that number to 176 suspected or confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis among 28 states. The investigation by the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) into the increase in infection cases has indicated a potential link between Fusarium keratitis and ReNu with MoistureLoc. According to the FDA, out of 30 suspected cases of Fusarium keratitis that have been investigated, 26 of the patients recalled using ReNu brand solution in the month prior to infection.

Symptoms and Treatment of Fusarium Keratitis
Individuals who wear contact lenses and those who use ReNu with MoistureLoc contact solution should be aware of the symptoms of Fusarium keratitis in order to ensure that they receive treatment at an early stage before adverse effects occur. The symptoms of Fusarium keratitis include redness, blurry vision, swelling, pain, discharge from the eye, and light sensitivity. Initial treatment of Fusarium keratitis can involve the use or oral and topical antifungal medications. If the patient does not respond to the antifungal medications or alternative treatments, surgery may be required including the possible need for corneal transplants.
