Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly referred to as IBD, is a general term referring to the chronic inflammatory diseases that affect the intestinal tract. Inflammatory bowel disease typically causes inflammation and ulceration of the digestive tract, including the stomach, mouth, and intestines. IBD is a very serious condition that can be extremely painful and debilitating. Although the various forms of IBD are similar in nature and are often mistaken for each other, each form affects different portions of the digestive tract. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are two of the most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease and are very similar in nature. Each condition affects different areas of the digestive tract as ulcerative colitis normally affects the large intestine, or colon, and the rectum, while Crohn's Disease may affect any portion of the digestive tract. It is estimated that IBD affects 600,000 people each year in the United States.
Accutane linked to IBD
Accutane has been linked to IBD, even in those patients who have no previous history of stomach or intestinal problems prior to taking Accutane. Stopping the use of Accutane may not put an end to the effects of the disorder and severe IBD cases may need ongoing treatment or even surgery to remove the affected colon, in order to deal with the symptoms. Signs and symptoms that may indicate the development of IBD or damage to internal organs of patients, may include severe stomach, chest or bowel pain, troubled or painful swallowing, heartburn, ulcers, fever, weight loss, yellowing of skin or eyes, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and dark urine.
