What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a severe skin condition, similar to toxic epidermal necrolysis, which is potentially fatal in severe cases. Stevens-Johnson syndrome causes rash and skin peeling to occur on the patient's body. The rash may often develop with blisters at the center. The red rash usually breaks out on the face and torso of the body and begins to spread from there. The skin condition also causes sores on mucous membranes of the eyelids, mouth, nose, genitals and possibly gastrointestinal and lower respiratory tract mucous membranes. The condition can be extremely painful as sores emit a thick fluid that hardens into a crust. The sores may line the mouth and swell the eyes shut causing difficulty eating and vision problems. Without proper treatment, Stevens Johnson syndrome may lead to permanent blindness, scarring of mucous membranes, arthritis, lung damage, dry eye syndrome, and asthma.

Causes of Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Stevens Johnson syndrome occurs more frequently in older adults but has been found in young children as well. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is most frequently caused by a reaction to medication. Most cases of Stevens Johnson syndrome may be caused by certain types of medication, including anticonvulsants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), barbiturates, and sulfa antibiotics. The syndrome may also be caused by bacterial infection in some cases. The NSAID Bextra, marketed by Pfizer, has been linked to severe skin side effects including Stevens Johnson syndrome. It has been reported that the FDA has received 87 reports of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and other skin reactions in users of Bextra. Four of those Bextra patients died while another thirty-six were hospitalized. Bextra was voluntarily removed from the market by Pfizer in April of 2005, at the request of the FDA.
