What is Osteonecrosis of the Jaw?

Osteonecrosis of the jaw, a condition also known as "jaw death," is a painful and possibly disfiguring condition that involves the breakdown of the jawbone. Osteonecrosis, or "bone death," in general is associated with the interference of the blood supply to the bone. The interference of the blood supply may lead to small breaks in the bone and eventually to the bone's collapse. Osteonecrosis of the jaw may be triggered by mouth trauma, including invasive dental procedures such as oral surgery and tooth extraction.

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw and Bisphosphonates

Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been the subject of substantial media coverage recently after cases of jaw death were linked to the class of medications known as bisphosphonates. This class of drugs includes the intravenous bisphosphonates Arediaand Zometa, and the popular oral bisphosphonate Fosamax. Patients who are treated with bisphosphonates should be aware of the symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw, which may include pain, infection, swelling, heavy feeling in the jaw, loosening of the teeth, poor healing of the gums, drainage and exposed bone. Treatment for osteonecrosis of the jaw may include the possibility of long-term use of antibiotics or surgery to remove dying bone tissue. There is no evidence indicating whether stopping the use of bisphosphonates will lower the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw as bisphosphonate medications metabolize slowly and remain in the bones for many years.
