What is Meridia?
Meridia, which has the generic name of sibutramine, was introduced and approved by the FDA in 1997. Meridia is marketed by Abbott Laboratories and is prescribed for people struggling with obesity. The drug assists the patient in dealing with obesity by affecting the part of your brain that controls hunger. Meridia is designed to block the re-uptake of certain brain chemicals called norepinephrine and serotonin. It is believed that this process provides the patient with a sense of fullness and satisfaction, which means that the patient will eat less food than usual.
Meridia Side Effects
The common side effects of Meridia may include insomnia, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Meridia has also been associated with more serious side effects that may cause significant health problems. Some of these negative side effects may even result in death. Meridia may increase blood pressure or heart rate of some patients, which can lead to significant health problems including heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke. People with a history of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, liver disease or kidney problems may be at an additional risk for significant negative side effects.

Meridia and Heart Disease
It has been reported that between 1997, when Meridia was introduced, and 2003, the FDA received reports of 30 people who died while they were taking Meridia. These 30 patients who died are all believed to have suffered from fatal cardiovascular problems. There were additional reports to the FDA concerning 224 nonfatal cardiovascular problems in patients taking Meridia, including strokes, heart attacks and other health problems. The consumer group Public Citizen has reported that Meridia is linked to 49 deaths resulting from heart disease since 1997. As a result of such reports, Public Citizen has twice petitioned the FDA, asking for Meridia’s removal from the market. The consumer group has also added Meridia to its "worst drugs" list. Some have estimated that over 15 million people have taken Meridia, in over 75 different countries since the drug was introduced.
