What is Meridia?

Meridia, which has the generic name of sibutramine, was introduced and approved by the FDA in 1997. Meridia is marketed by Abbott Laboratories and is prescribed for people struggling with obesity. The drug assists the patient in dealing with obesity by affecting the part of your brain that controls hunger. Meridia is designed to block the re-uptake of certain brain chemicals called norepinephrine and serotonin. It is believed that this process provides the patient with a sense of fullness and satisfaction, which means that the patient will eat less food than usual.
