What is Mifeprex?
Mifeprex is manufactured by Danco Laboratories, and has the generic name of mifepristone. Mifeprex has also been referred to by the name of RU-486 and is also commonly referred to in the media as the "abortion pill." Mifeprex is designed for women in order to end a pregnancy during its early stage without surgery, in a process sometimes called a drug-induced or medical abortion. The abortion pill was approved only for use during the early stage of pregnancy, which is within the first 49 days after the last menstrual cycle began. Mifeprex works by blocking a hormone called progesterone, that is required to sustain a pregnancy. Blocking the progesterone hormone causes the uterine lining to break down. Mifeprex is used in conjunction with another drug called misoprostol, which is taken after Mifeprex to assist in the termination of the pregnancy. Misoprostol is designed to trigger contractions of the uterus, which expels the embryo. Mifeprex has been previously used in Europe, but only recieved approval for use in the United States in the year 2000.
Mifeprex Black Box Warning
The FDA has added a black box warning to the labeling of Mifeprex concerning harmful side effects including severe bleeding and sepsis. Mifeprex has been linked to reports of sepsis in women who have used the drug, along with misoprostol, to end a pregnancy. Sepsis, or septic shock, can occur when there is a bacterial infection in the bloodstream that may affect vital organs and has the potential to be fatal if not properly treated. Some reports indicate that Mifeprex has been linked to at least 4 deaths from sepsis in the United States alone. There is an additional report indicating the death of a woman in Canada from sepsis as well. The four women who died in the United States all suffered infections from the same rare bacteria known as Clostridium sordellii. This type of bacterial infection may not cause a fever, which is a common sign of an infection. Since fever does not always occur, physicians and patients who use Mifeprex should be aware of additional signs of a possible infection, so that proper treatment can be given in time. All four of these women were reportedly young and healthy, and all four deaths occurred in California. A recent report has linked Mifeprex to as many as 8 total deaths including 5 from sepsis. Mifeprex has also been associated with 68 cases of severe hemorrhaging requiring transfusions.
