What is Mobic?
Mobic, marketed in the United States by Abbott Laboratories, has the generic name of meloxicam. Mobic is a member of the class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also commonly referred to as NSAIDs. Other members of the NSAIDs include such popular medications as naproxen and ibuprofen. Mobic is prescribed to patients suffering from the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, which may include swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and joint pain. Mobic received its approval from the FDA in April of 2000.
Mobic Side Effects
NSAIDs have been linked to liver damage. Patients taking NSAIDs, including Mobic, should be aware of the symptoms of liver damage which include yellow coloring of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and flu like symptoms. NSAIDs may also be linked to cardiovascular problems including heart attack and stroke. In addition, NSAIDs may be associated with an increased risk of hypertension, congestive heart failure, and edema. NSAIDs as a class are also linked to gastrointestinal problems including bleeding and ulceration. The class of drugs is also linked to perforation of the stomach or intestines, which is potentially fatal. Life threatening skin conditions, such as Stevens Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, have been linked to some NSAIDs, including the prescription drug Bextra which has been removed from the market.
