What is Seroquel?
Seroquel, which has the generic name quetiapine fumarate, is marketed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. Seroquel received FDA approval in 1997. Seroquel falls into the category of pharmaceuticals known as atypical antipsychotics, which were introduced as a new type of medications for the treatment of schizophrenia. The drugs in the atypical antipsychotics class are prescribed for the treatment of symptoms associated with schizophrenia and Bipolar I disorder. Schizophrenia, a mental illness that can distort the way you perceive the world around you, may include symptoms such as delusions, hearing voices or seeing things. People with bipolar I disorder, a mood disorder also known as manic-depressive disorder, may suffer from manic episodes. In addition to Seroquel, other medications that fall into the atypical antipsychotic category include Zyprexa, Abilify, Geodon, and Risperdal.
Seroquel Side Effects
Common side effects of Seroquel may include headache, agitation, dry mouth, pain, vomiting, constipation, weight gain, and upset stomach. The class of atypical antipsychotics in general, including Seroquel, may be linked to serious health problems including, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), tardive dyskinesia (TD), stroke, diabetes, and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). The FDA has added a black box warning to the labeling of atypical antipsychotics, including Seroquel, responding to to reports that older patients treated for dementia with atypical antipsychotics had an increased risk of death when compared to patients in a placebo control group. The majority of the deaths appear to have been caused by heart related ailments such as heart disease and infections like pneumonia.

Seroquel Diabetes Warning
In 2003, the FDA asked manufacturers of all atypical antipsychotic medications, including AstraZeneca, to include a warning statement alerting patients to the increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes for patients who are being treated with these drugs. Atypical antipsychotics in general have been linked to increasing the risk of obesity, high cholesterol, as well as diabetes. Seroquel users who have additional risk factors for diabetes such as obesity or family history of diabetes are advised to undergo glucose testing before beginning treatment with atypical antipsychotics. Patients should be monitored for any symptoms of hyperglycemia that may develop during treatment with Seroquel. These effects of obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes may increase the risk of developing heart disease.
