What is Soriatane?
Soriatane, also known by the generic name acitretin, is marketed and sold by Hoffmann-La Roche. Soriatane is a drug prescribed to treat very severe forms of psoriasis. It is normally used only in the most severe cases of psoriasis since serious side effects are indicated.
Soriatane Side Effects
Soriatane is a retinoid compound, and known to cause severe birth defects. A pregnancy prevention program has been in place since its product launch in 1997. Prescription requires two negative pregnancy tests before beginning of therapy. Female patients must use two effective forms of birth control, and sign an informed consent agreement acknowledging that they are aware that they must not get pregnant during therapy or for three years after discontinuing treatment.

Other side effects of Soriatane may include liver toxicity, pancreatitis, increased intracranial pressure, bone spurs, alteration in lipid levels, cardiovascular effects, and eye problems. Soriatane and Depression
Soriatane includes precautions about depression, noting, "Depression and/or other psychiatric symptoms such as aggressive feelings or thoughts of self-harm have been reported." Patients should be counseled to discontinue Soriatane use and notify their physicians immediately if they experience detrimental psychiatric effects.
