What is Tequin?
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company markets Tequin, which has the generic name of gatifloxacin. Tequin is an antibiotic that is prescribed to patients suffering from sinus, lung, or urinary tract infections. Tequin is a member of the class of drugs known as fluoroquinolone antibiotics, which are designed to treat bacterial infections. Other members of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic class of medications include Levaquin, Cipro, and Avelox. Tequin was approved by the FDA in 1999.
Tequin and Blood Sugar Warning
Recently, the FDA has reported that Bristol Myers Squibb has made changes to the labeling of Tequin regarding the risk of negative effects on patient's blood sugar. The new warning label changes strengthen previous warnings concerning blood sugar problems including the risk of both hypoglycemia, which is low blood sugar, and hyperglycemia, which is high blood sugar. The company has strengthened the warnings due to the continued reports of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in patients taking Tequin. Some of the patients who suffered blood sugar side effects had no prior history of diabetes. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia warnings were first added to Tequin in 2002. According to the FDA, the new label will also include a contraindication for diabetic patients. The label will also address additional risk factors for developing hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, which includes renal insufficiency, advanced age, and taking other medication that affects blood sugar while taking Tequin. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2006/NEW01318.html

Tequin Side Effects
The fluoroquinolone antibiotics in general, including Tequin, have been linked to additional harmful side effects including peripheral neuropathy and pseudomembranous colitis. Peripheral neuropathy is a general term referring to damage done to the peripheral nervous system, which consists of those motor and sensory nerves connecting the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy may include pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness. Pseudomembranous colitis, also referred to as antibiotic associated colitis, may also be linked to Tequin. Bacteria in the intestine may overgrow and release toxin while taking antibiotics. This effect may cause the lining of the colon to become raw and bleed. If not treated effectively by other means, severe cases of pseudomembranous colitis may necessitate surgery. Pseudomembranous colitis may occur while being treated with antibiotics or even after treatment has ended. Patients should be aware of symptoms of pseudomembranous colitis such as abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhea, and blood in stool.
