What is Trasylol?
Trasylol, which has the generic name of aprotinin injection, is manufactured by Bayer AG. Trasylol is a drug used to prevent perioperative blood loss and the need for blood transfusion, in patients undergoing a procedure called coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. This type of heart surgery redirects the blood around clogged arteries, in order to increase the blood-flow and oxygen to the heart. Trasylol is known as a broad-spectrum proteinase inhibitor. The drug is designed to work by blocking the enzymes in the body that dissolve blood clots. Trasylol received approval by the FDA in 1993. Worldwide Trasylol sales were approximately $210 million for 2005.
