What is Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin, also sold as Wellbutrin XL, has the generic name of bupropion hydrochloride. Wellbutrin is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline and is prescribed as a medication used to treat depression and bipolar disorder. Some research has reported that depression may be the result of an imbalance of the brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Many popular antidepressant medications on the market are designed to affect the brain chemical serotonin. Wellbutrin is different, as it does not deal with serotonin levels. Instead of serotonin, Wellbutrin is designed to help restore the balance of the brain chemicals known as dopamine and norepinepherine. Wellbutrin is aimed at improving the mood in the patient suffering from depression and may create feelings of well-being.
Side Effects of Wellbutrin
The more common side effects of Wellbutrin may include trouble sleeping, restlessness, headache, migraine, nausea, weight fluctuations, tremor, constipation, rash, and dry mouth. Wellbutrin may lead to more serious side effects including suicidal thoughts, anxiety, agitation, seizure, mania, high blood pressure, and liver damage. Wellbutrin may also lead to seizure, coma or high body temperature if it is taken in conjunction with a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, also known as MAOI.

Wellbutrin Black Box Warning and Risk of Child Suicide
Recent studies have shown that when children and adolescents take antidepressants to treat depression and anxiety disorders, there is a risk that there may be an increase in suicidal thoughts or actions. Some studies report that there may be as much as a two-fold increase in the risk of suicide amongst kids who are prescribed antidepressants. In October of 2004, the FDA issued a public health advisory concerning antidepressants and possible links to an increase in child suicide ideation. The FDA also ordered the manufacturers of antidepressants to include a "black box warning" on the drug labels, warning of the possible link between antidepressants and child suicide. Wellbutrin is included amongst those drugs required to carry the new warning along with other popular antidepressants including Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac. The black box warning is the strongest warning the FDA has available to it. The material included in the black box warning must be incorporated on the label as well as all advertisements for the drugs. The increased risk of suicide or suicidal contemplation occurs when the patients first begin using the drug or when the dosage amount is first changed. The possible link between treatment with antidepressants and an increase in suicidal thoughts or actions may apply to adults as well as children and adolescents who are treated with antidepressant medication.
