In August 2007 Mattel, Inc. issued two major voluntary recalls of children’s toys, involving over 9 million Chinese-made toys. Some of these toys contain magnets that children can swallow, others have surface paint with excessive levels of lead.
Lead paint is toxic and children under the age of six are especially vulnerable to the dangers of lead-poisoning. Even very low levels of exposure can result in reduced IQ, stunted growth, kidney damage, impaired hearing and other problems in young children. At high levels a young child may become mentally retarded, fall into a coma or die. Magnets swallowed by small children can attract one another and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal.
Toys recently recalled include "Dora the Explorer’s" Talking House and "Sarge" cars from the movie "Cars" because of lead paint, and "Batman" action figure sets and "Barbie and Tanner" dolls because of magnets. A complete listing of products recalled can be found on Mattel’s web site. Further information about the recall can be found on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s web site.
